September 2023: Virtual meeting

Posterior Fossa Society's virtual meeting in September 2023 was an online gathering of over 50 participants who were engaged in discussing various aspects of nosology, scoring, imaging, surgery, and rehabilitation of cerebellar mutism syndrome. The virtual platform provided a seamless experience, allowing experts from around the world to come together and share their insights. The discussions were insightful, with participants exchanging valuable knowledge and experiences, leading to significant advancements in the understanding and management of CMS. The meeting served as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation, laying the foundation for further research and improvements in patient care. Specific goals and areas to focus on arising from the meeting were as follows:

SCORING

  • Whether a scoring system is useful

  • Review of the literature

  • Comparison and validation the different scoring systems

  • Delphi process on scoring – outcomes

  • Survey on the important post op symptoms

 SURGERY

  • Consensus statement on surgical avoidance of CMS (in draft)

  • Assessment of neurological outcomes in the post surgical patients

  • Liaison with MB6 study team

IMAGING

  • Validation of the risk assessment scores

  • Lesion mapping in individual centres

  • Intra operative imaging

  • Connectomics results

  • Other clinical features to correlate with imaging

REHABILITATION

  • Ideas on Definition of Rehab

  • Literature review on patient and family experiences

  • Preliminary EEG data

2018: Reykjavik, Iceland

The second Consensus meeting, which took place at the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik in August 2018, marked a significant milestone in the global effort to tackle cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS). Delegates from across the world gathered to share their expertise and insights, resulting in the formation of multiple working groups focused on different areas of research. These groups delved into the intricate realms of imaging and surgical aspects of CMS, developing innovative strategies and techniques. Additionally, a working group was formed to review and optimise the existing scoring scales for CMS in order to provide a standardized framework for assessment and diagnosis. Understanding the critical role of rehabilitation in the recovery process, another working group was established to explore effective rehabilitation techniques tailored specifically for CMS patients.

2016: Liverpool, UK

This meeting was held jointly with the ISPNO.

2015: Reykjavik, Iceland

At which formal diagnostic definition of posterior fossa syndrome / cerebellar mutism syndrome was agreed. The consensus paper, published in Child’s Nervous System in 2016, resulted directly from this meeting.
